Against Breast Cancer is a charity dedicated to increase survival after breast cancer diagnosis by funding groundbreaking research into secondary breast cancer (metastases) to find key prevention factors and improved detection and treatment.
Our collection of biological samples (the ABC Biobank) and associated dietary and lifestyle information involved over 3,300 women from 56 hospitals across the UK over a 5 year period and is the largest and most comprehensive collection of its kind in the world dedicated to the study of secondary breast cancer. Studying this collection has enabled researchers to find differences between women who developed secondary breast cancer and those who did not, showing the key risk factors. Currently, we are exploiting the latest advanced analysis tools to explore this unique set of data complemented by the latest laboratory techniques to measure a comprehensive range of molecules in the samples to discover new risk and early diagnosis biomarkers.
Our current treatment research programme focuses on creating novel antibodies to enhance the body’s own immune system to destroy cancerous cells by targeting the abnormal sugars on the cells surface
Our unique approach
The ultimate goal of Against Breast Cancer is to prevent secondary spread, the main cause of breast cancer related deaths
Researching new treatments
We need new treatments that target all types of secondary breast cancer cells before they have the chance to grow into tumours wherever they may be in the body.
We envisage a future where a blood or urine home test is available for people to monitor themselves for breast cancer and secondary spread.
There is a need for solid, evidence-based advice on diet and lifestyle factors that reduce the risk of secondary spread occurring.
Where your donation goes
We receive no government funding, and are entirely reliant on the generosity of individuals and organisations to fund our research to improve detection and increase survival after breast cancer diagnosis.
